Course Description
With the sharp increase in referrals for autistic and neurodivergent children and young people (CYP), this course — underpinned by autism theories — has been designed to support Arts Therapists in adapting their practice to work safely, sensitively, and effectively with their clients. Suitable for Arts Therapists, Counsellors, and practitioners from related fields who work with autistic and neurodivergent CYP, this experiential course will guide participants through creative therapeutic approaches to enhance their practice and improve client outcomes. Developed in collaboration with neurodivergent children and young people, the course includes practical activities aimed at supporting sensory development, sensory processing, sensory integration, and communication strategies. It is informed by evidence-based early years autism programmes, children’s drawing development, neuroscience, and polyvagal theory. Participants will explore a variety of creative approaches designed to support assessment, goal setting, and intervention planning, alongside developing an understanding of the sensory properties of art materials and how to create autism-sensitive sensory environments for CYP.
