Course Description

CChildren and Young People’s mental health workers play a crucial role in supporting the emotional and psychological well-being of the children and young people in their care. Practitioners often work with children and young people experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, and other mental health challenges. While deeply rewarding, this work can also be emotionally demanding, leading to stress, overwhelm, vicarious trauma, and burnout. In the process of caring for others, professionals can easily overlook their own well-being. Maintaining good self-care and well-being is an essential part of professional practice and is highlighted in the HCPC Standards of Proficiency for Arts Therapists (HCPC, 2023): 3. Look after their health and well-being, seeking appropriate support where necessary 3.1 Identify anxiety and stress in themselves and recognise the potential impact on their practice 3.2 Understand the importance of mental and physical health and adopt strategies to maintain fitness to practise 3.3 Take appropriate action if their health may affect their ability to practise safely and effectively, including seeking help and support when needed 3.4 Develop and adopt clear strategies for physical and mental self-care to maintain a high standard of professional effectiveness and ensure a safe working environment Creative Self-Care Workshop Our creative self-care workshop supports practitioners in identifying early warning signs of overload and restoring regulation through specially designed guided exercises. Stop, Sense and Centre and Break, Breathe and Balance will help practitioners to: Understand how stress affects the brain and body Recognise and respond to the early warning signs of overload Develop at least two centring techniques to use during the working day This training is suitable for team days or inset/in-service days and can be delivered in person or online.
