Course Description
This two-day course, facilitated by Mary Rose Brady and Dr. Patricia Watts, is designed for practitioners who wish to enhance their knowledge and skills in supporting children and young people with medical conditions, whether diagnosed or undiagnosed. Supporting children and young people with medical conditions requires practitioners to have an understanding of the physical, social, emotional, and developmental impact of living with a medical condition. The course will explore: Understanding a child’s journey and the potential disruptions to physical, emotional, social, and educational development The impact of having, awaiting, or not receiving a medical diagnosis Co-occurring conditions and their effects Child development, polyvagal theory, health behaviour change, and safeguarding considerations Medical trauma, procedural anxiety, and approaches to working with pain and medication The relationship between non-organic pain and trauma Health inequalities and their influence on care and outcomes Identity and belonging in the context of medical conditions Navigating medical settings including primary care, out-patient care, in-patient care, and palliative care Working effectively within multi-disciplinary teams Supporting siblings and families Promoting advocacy, voice, and communication through creative engagement Using art-based approaches to support emotional literacy, psychoeducation, regulation, distraction, and self-management Learning Outcomes By the end of the course, participants will be able to: Identify potential developmental disruptors in a child’s journey and work with resilience factors to minimise developmental disruption Recognise the challenges associated with receiving, awaiting, or lacking a diagnosis Understand the impact of co-occurring issues on overall well-being Recognise the signs of medical trauma, procedural anxiety, and the associated risks to mental health Increase awareness of normative child development, polyvagal theory, health behaviour change, and safeguarding considerations when working with children who have medical conditions Understand how medical conditions may affect attachment, parent-child relationships, and family functioning Use art-based approaches to promote communication, advocacy, and self-expression for children and young people in medical settings Apply creative techniques to support emotional literacy, psychoeducation, self-regulation, and self-management Course Cost Self-funded:
Cancellation Policy
The Centre for Creative Therapeutic Practice (TCCTP) Refund and Cancellation Guidance Policy and Conditions Joining information for all of TCCTP's courses will normally be sent 1-week prior to the start date - please check your junk & spam folders if you have not seen this information - contacting the office on the day or evening before the start date will not always be responded to prior to the course starting. All cancellations must be submitted in writing to hello@tcctp.org. Cancellations made one month or before will be refunded in full minus £10 administration fee. Less than one month but more than 14 days before the course will be charged at 50%. Less than 14 days' notice will be fully chargeable. Please Note • We require full payment by the date stated on your invoice (unless you have agreed a payment plan). If payment is not received you will be removed from the course list and will have to re-book. • Programmes are subject to change. • It is the attendees responsibility to check their email including junk and spam folders for joining details. • There is a possibility that the course/event may be cancelled due to insufficient numbers, unforeseen circumstances, or force majeure. In the case of insufficient numbers or unforeseen circumstances, a full refund will be offered. In the case of force majeure such as the Coronavirus pandemic, alternative dates will be offered. If these dates are not suitable, a partial refund will be offered taking into account cost of overheads • If TCCTP offer face-2-face training - Please do not book any travel or accommodation until you have received confirmation of your booking from TCCTP. We will not be liable for this cost in the event you are not booked onto the course/event. • Where fees for attendees are being paid by a third party (e.g. employer). TCCTP will endeavour to collect the course fee through invoicing. However, where the third party fails to make payment, the course attendee will remain liable for said fees if cancellation is not made on time within our terms (see cancellation our policy above).
