Service Description

The Diploma is an advanced course delivered over 12 days over 1 year (7hrs per day) and is designed for practitioners who wish to develop creative therapeutic practice as part of their role to further support the emotional wellbeing of children and young people. This will provide the tools to create a safe, flexible and responsive intervention, providing an early intervention model of support to children and young people before issues escalate and require more intensive therapeutic services. Throughout the course, learners will attend twelve teaching sessions over the course of a year to gain an understanding of the diverse needs and challenges faced by children and young people and engage with a curriculum that blends theoretical learning with hands-on experience and dedicated time for the development of creative skills. This includes a focus on working safely and ethically as a practitioner, the principles of therapeutic language and practice, child development, attachment and trauma, neuroscience, safeguarding, child mental health, suicidal ideation and self-harm, neurodivergence, working with families and working in schools. An integral component of the course is a dedicated placement, offering learners the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills in a practice setting under the supervision of a qualified art therapist. It is also a requirement for learners to engage in their own personal therapy for 12 sessions prior to embarking on a placement*. Learners will also demonstrate their knowledge and skills through a combination of written work, case study presentation and the development of a creative portfolio which will be assessed and examined. Upon successful completion of the course, learners will be awarded a Diploma in Creative Therapeutic Practice. The time commitment is 1 day of training per month over 12 months and approximately 16 weeks of placement time. There will also be additional learning and personal study approximately 350 learning hours over the year. *The cost of personal therapy is in addition to the course fees.
